Protect your future: Simple strategies to keep you healthy

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVE. A yearly shot is the best way to protect yourself from the flu. In fact, vaccines and immunizations protect everyone around you, including people at risk for serious complications, such as young kids and older adults. If you're in a high-risk group, get your shot early, before the flu season peaks.

Healthy Habit

MAKE SURE YOUR SHOTS ARE UP TO DATE. Even if you had all of your vaccinations as a child, some vaccines, such as the one protecting against tetanus, wear off. Vaccination needs also change based on age, travel plans and existing health conditions.

TRY IT: When you get your annual flu shot this year, ask your health care provider which other vaccines you need.

Five to Try

Preventive care means taking action today to lower the risk of future health problems. Here are some key steps experts recommend for every adult's preventive care plan.

1. VISIT your primary care provider for your annual checkup, screenings and shots. Also schedule regular dental and eye exams, well-woman, well-man and well-baby/child visits, and follow-up appointments with specialists.

2. MOVE MORE. A good goal for most adults is 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise. On two of the days, add some muscle-strengthening exercises. Always check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine. For inspiration, join the Go for 10 challenge. Registration closes Aug. 5.

3. GET YOUR HEALTHY SERVINGS. Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal. And drink plenty of water. For inspiration, join the Just Add Water challenge. Registration closes Aug. 5.

4. QUIT TOBACCO. The QuitNet® tobacco cessation program provided by Take Charge! Live Well! can help you quit and stay tobacco-free.

5. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Being overweight or underweight can put you at risk. Talk to your doctor about your weight, BMI (body mass index) and waist circumference, and ask what is a smart goal for you.
