Start smart to live well in the New Year
START SMART TO LIVE WELL IN THE NEW YEAR. HEALTHWAYS, a sharecare company.

The new year is a new start. What better time to take your health into your own hands? Keep your resolutions by making little changes that you can live with for life. Eating healthy and being active will help you feel better and reduce the risk of diseases — and it also can help you lose weight!

HEALTHY HABIT
TAKE SMALL STEPS. Losing weight is an admirable goal. The best way to achieve it is to make little changes that add up over time. Aim to work toward two or three goals at a time, and make those goals specific and realistic.
TRY IT: Choose a big-picture goal. For example: Lose 50 pounds and manage diabetes. Then write three short-term goals that you feel confident you can accomplish. Achieving them will motivate you to keep going.

SMART TIPS
You need to be able to walk for 10 minutes before you can walk for 30 minutes nonstop. The same principle applies to increasing the number of vegetable servings per week. Here are some small steps that will lead to lasting changes.
1 / MAKE THE TIME
Schedule a 10-minute walk in your calendar. Pick a time that works for you, perhaps the morning or after lunch. This will help you stick to your plan.
2 / EAT BREAKFAST
Research shows that people who lose weight and keep it off don't skip their morning meal. If you're short on time, try a smoothie, instant plain oatmeal with nuts and fruit, or avocado toast topped with an egg.
3 / MEET A FRIEND
Take a group fitness class with a friend. Not only will they hold you accountable, you'll also have more fun.
4 / SIP SMART
Sugary drinks don't fill you up and the calories add up quickly. Stick to water, black coffee, unsweetened tea or flavored water.
5 / WEIGH IN WEEKLY
This helps you keep track of your progress and has been shown to help people.

SPOTLIGHT
Losing weight with someone else can help you stay motivated. Meeting with a friend to walk is a great way to get more active, build social connections and fit exercise into your schedule. Try these walking tips to get started.

NOURISH YOURSELF
Broth-based soup is an excellent choice for weight loss. The combination of vegetables, lean protein and healthy carbs provides loads of nutrition but only minimal calories — and it fills you up.
VEGETABLE LOVER'S CHICKEN SOUP
On a cold winter night, nothing is more comforting than soup. This meal only requires some chopping and stirring, and the protein and veggies will leave you satisfied. Get the recipe
